The customer

Promoting awareness about the safe, economical, and sustainable consumption of water from the public network is a key focus for SMAS TV. Their mission transcends merely providing this essential resource; they are committed to continual modernization in the ever-evolving quest for public health and enhancing the community's quality of life. Beyond ensuring water supply and waste management, SMAS plays a pivotal role in sanitation. They handle the collection, drainage, and conveyance of effluents to "upstream" systems, all under the watchful oversight of Águas do Tejo Atlântico.

The objectives

Emanuel Pontes, from SMAS Torres Vedras, emphasises that the main challenge was not only to manage the water supply, but also to improve public health and the population's quality of life. Promoting the benefits of consuming water from the public network and modernising the existing infrastructure were essential priorities.
Solution implemented. This complex web of responsibilities required a robust and agile network solution, hence the implementation of the SD-WAN MERAKI system.

The solution

To meet these challenges, SMAS Torres Vedras, in collaboration with Logicalis and Cisco, implemented an integrated digital solution based on Cisco's SDWAN MERAKI.
This modernisation has enabled

  • Increased security: significantly improved levels of protection for operations;
  • The upgrading of telemetry: implementing a complete water management system, including sensors and applications supported by a LoRaWan network;
  • Operational efficiency: increasing the effectiveness of operations and resulting in a better service to the population.

The business benefits

Ricardo Silva, from Cisco, explains that Cisco's networking solutions guarantee better water utilisation and establish a crucial technological basis for the digital transformation of cities, evolving into Smart Cities. The perfect connection between on-prem networks and cloud applications has facilitated the transition to a digital-first approach.
Emanuel Pontes adds that the innovation has brought several improvements:

  • Optimisation of IT resources: ensuring agility and the ability to scale to meet the municipality's growing needs;
  • Simplification of support: having a single point of contact (Logicalis Portugal), which uncomplicated support and ensured the overall effectiveness of the system;
  • Operational gains: increasing network availability and substantially reducing electrical, maintenance and telecoms costs.

Key takeaways

The success of the project is measured by the increase in the quality of the services provided to the population and the various operational gains. Hugo Tomé, from Logicalis, concludes that in order to adapt to changing business needs, it is essential to have a more intelligent, scalable and secure network. Logicalis offers a network assessment that, in less than two weeks, provides costs and timescales to help organisations achieve their connectivity objectives.
