Q&A with Nick Zinzan Interim Responsible Business Leader for Logicalis

1.    Could you briefly outline your background in sustainability and what led you to join Logicalis as our new Sustainability leader?

Having worked as an operations director in a boutique management consultancy, where I gained invaluable knowledge across many of the departments involved in developing a successful corporate sustainability program, I took on the role of Head of Responsible Business for the parent company, Kin and Carta Plc.

Over the course of four years, we implemented a company-wide sustainability strategy at this digital transformation consultancy, and became the first B Corp on the London Stock Exchange.

Subsequently, I worked for a couple of years as an independent ESG consultant, which gave me great experience across sectors, but recently I was keen to get back involved in implementing an ambitious responsible business programme for a large multinational, and so was delighted to join Logicalis in this role.

2.    What is the most challenging aspect of your role as a Sustainability leader? What is the most rewarding?

Actually the most challenging aspect is probably also the most rewarding: sustainability covers a wide range of different and distinct topics, from carbon emissions to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and from supplier engagement to reporting against complex regulatory requirements (amongst others..).

I love the variety of interesting areas across the business that I get to work on and hopefully have a positive impact in, but having to think about and rapidly switch between variable topics during the day sometimes makes my head spin!

3.    What role do you envisage technology playing in driving sustainable practices within the IT industry?

Advances in technology will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role. For example, reducing carbon emissions through cloud computing, more energy-efficient hardware and software solutions, the integration of smart grids and internet of things, and facilitating the recycling and safe disposal of e-waste will all help the IT industry to become more sustainable.

4.    Logicalis has set a goal to be carbon neutral (scope 1 and 2) by 2025. Can you share any insights into where we are at on that mission?

I’m delighted to say we are on track to be carbon neutral globally for FY25 by June this year. We have robust carbon measurement systems in place across regions and will be using our new environmental management software, Envisi, to record the data and calculate our emissions after financial year end.

Then all Logicalis regions will be purchasing the relevant amount of verifiable carbon offsets from the reputable UN platform, supported where necessary by the Responsible Business team, in order to deliver carbon neutrality for Logicalis globally.

5.    What are the next sustainability milestones for Logicalis after we achieve carbon neutral this year and how do we plan to get there?

Our next sustainability milestones, as validated by SBTi, are to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 (from a baseline year of 2022), and to have 85% of our suppliers by spend adopting science-based targets themselves by 2028.

We have targets and energy efficiency plans in place for each country to reduce the relevant emissions over the coming years to ensure we hit our 2030 goal, which are re-evaluated every year to take into account ongoing performance. This is a challenging process and we envisage a few bumps in the road, but we taking a flexible and pragmatic approach to give ourselves the best chance of success. As of the end of FY24, we had reduced Scope 1 emissions by 27%.

We have also been evaluating supplier performance already, with 57% of suppliers by spend having science-based targets in place at last count. We will continue to update our records and engage where necessary to encourage our partners to set targets and so achieve our goal.
